This post is a tribute to the late David Bowie, a person of immense contribution to his generation and beyond. Among his most famous works are “Modern Love”, “Blue Jean”, “Rebel Rebel”…
However, his “China Girl” remains very dear to my heart as it addresses a recurrent modern phenomenon. In this beautiful song, a Western man falls in love with a Chinese woman. Although he loves her, he warns her to stay away from him to stop himself from corrupting her.
The song focuses on the idea of a “Western” man infecting her Eastern culture by introducing Western values, materialism and artificial beauty. In the song, Bowie threatens to give his China Girl “eyes of blue”, ”televisions”, and “men who want to rule the world”, but finally, “China Girl” tells him to shut his mouth.
Bowie has always been a man of controversy addressing social phenomena and human rights issues in an artful manner. Bowie left us, but his songs will remain as a lasting memory of a great era.
